Kybella is an injectable used to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fat, also referred to as the “double chin”). The active ingredient in Kybella is deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule that destroys fat cells. Through a series of injections (typically 2-6 treatment sessions), fat cells are destroyed and eliminated by the body, providing the chin with an improved contour and appearance. This treatment is FDA-approved, safe and effective, and requires much less recovery time than traditional liposuction for the chin. While Kybella can be administered in other locations of the body, it is not known if Kybella is safe and effective for the treatment of fat outside of the submental area. During your initial consultation, Dr. Gharavi will evaluate and determine if you are a candidate for Kybella. Ideal candidates are those without a previous history of surgery (neck lift), in good health, and those with good neck skin elasticity. During your consultation, Dr. Gharavi will determine the least amount of treatments needed to give maximum results. For most patients, downtime following Kybella injection is minimal and the injections are well-tolerated. The most common side effects include temporary swelling, numbness and redness, which may resolve over a period of several days.
